Getting the correct mask is essential to ensure you have the best possible snorkelling experience. A mask creates an air space in front of your eyes which allows your eyes to focus underwater.

Ensure You Get The Right Fit
When you buy a mask you will want to check its watertight before taking it into the water. To check this on land simply place the mask on your face and breathe in through your nose, whilst inhaling the mask should stay on your face without any air rushing in from anywhere around the skirt. Try this process with a snorkel in your mouth to make sure its still comfortable.
Silicone Skirt's, Clear Or Black?
On some masks you will have the option of a clear or black silicone skirt. The benefit of a clear skirt is that it dramatically increases the ambient light coming into the mask making it seem much more airy and feel less claustrophobic. A black mask, however, helps to prevent any glare or light bouncing back from the lens. The vast majority of photographers will wear a black skirt mask for this reason.
Why Do I Want A Low Volume Mask?
Getting the lowest volume mask possible is a great idea for snorkelling, a low volume mask is essentially a smaller space inside the mask, a smaller space inside the mask makes for easier mask clearance and because the lenses are closer to your eyes generally a wider field of vision also.
